Gujarat Farmer Duped in Massive US Job Scam: Losing Rs 40 Lakh to Fraudsters (2025)

Imagine a farmer's dream shattered, not by drought, but by deceit. A heartbreaking story unfolds in Gujarat, where a trusting father lost a staggering Rs 40 lakh in a job scam that promised his son and daughter-in-law a new life in the United States. This is a stark reminder of the lengths people will go to for a better future, and the predators who exploit that hope.

A 52-year-old farmer from Sardhav village in Gandhinagar has filed a police complaint, detailing how he was swindled by four individuals. These individuals, residents of Sargasan, Gandhinagar, lured him with the promise of securing US jobs for his son and daughter-in-law. The initial agreement was that the family would pay a total of Rs 1.2 crore, with Rs 60 lakh upfront, and the rest upon arrival in America. The farmer, driven by the desire to provide a better life for his family, scraped together funds from savings and loans, handing over a massive Rs 85 lakh to the agents.

The story began in May 2024, when the farmer's son, seeking employment abroad, met the agents. The agents, along with three others, presented themselves as experts in sending people overseas legally. They assured the farmer that they had contacts in America and had successfully placed many people in jobs. Community members even vouched for the agents, further solidifying the farmer's trust.

On May 21st, the agents collected Rs 10 lakh and took the couple to the airport, promising a direct flight to New York via Mumbai. However, instead of America, the couple's journey took a deceptive turn. They were first kept waiting in Mumbai for 10 days, then taken to Vietnam, and later to Thailand. They never reached their intended destination. After enduring a month and a half of travel, the couple returned to India, only to be forced to pay an additional Rs 10 lakh to retrieve their passports. The agents have returned only Rs 45 lakh of the original Rs 85 lakh, leaving the farmer with a devastating Rs 40 lakh loss.

But here's where it gets controversial... the agents' actions are a clear breach of trust and a violation of the law.

And this is the part most people miss... the desperation for a better life can make anyone vulnerable to such scams.
