A Silent Epidemic: Diabetes in India
In a country where wellness is a priority, a concerning trend has emerged. Diabetes, a lifestyle disease, is quietly spreading its reach, affecting a significant portion of the population. With a stable overall wellness score, India faces a hidden battle against ailments like diabetes, stress, and heart conditions.
The latest India Wellness Index study, released on World Diabetes Day, paints a worrying picture. Diabetes is not just a concern for the elderly; it's targeting millennials and corporate workers, highlighting the impact of modern lifestyles. The study, conducted by ICICI Lombard, reveals a generation gap in wellness, with Gen Z struggling and Gen X showing improvements.
A Generation at Risk
The survey, covering over 2,000 individuals from major urban centers, assessed six key aspects of well-being. One of the most alarming findings is the prevalence of diabetes among 17% of Indians, making it one of the top five ailments. This disease, often associated with an unhealthy lifestyle, is now a major health risk, especially for younger generations.
Sheena Kapoor, Head of Marketing at ICICI Lombard, emphasizes the impact of erratic routines and stress on younger cohorts. She highlights the contrast between the intentional approach to wellness adopted by women and Gen X, focusing on fitness, family health, and financial protection, and the need for a disciplined daily routine.
Corporate Wellness Crisis
The study further reveals a crisis in corporate wellness. Employees, especially women and younger generations, are experiencing declines in physical and financial well-being. Despite recognizing the impact of high-pressure environments on heart health, many ignore symptoms, attributing them to stress. Work-life balance is a struggle, affecting two-thirds of Indians, with corporates facing the brunt of this challenge.
But here's where it gets controversial... Health insurance ownership seems to be a game-changer. It boosts overall wellness, especially in financial and family aspects. Those with physical conditions seek pre-existing and critical illness coverage, while mental health symptoms drive the demand for mental health coverage and wellness integration.
And this is the part most people miss... Diabetes, often seen as an individual's battle, is a societal issue. It's time we address the root causes - sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and stress - to prevent this silent epidemic from spreading further.
