Canada's Inflation Rate: Gas Prices Impact and Bank of Canada's Outlook (2025)

Canada's inflation rate drops to 2.2% in October, primarily due to lower gas prices, according to Statistics Canada. Excluding gas, inflation remains steady at 2.6%, mirroring September's figure. The data agency attributes the decline in pump prices to drivers opting for cheaper winter blends and a decrease in crude prices, amidst ongoing oversupply concerns. While gas and food prices contributed to the moderation, underlying prices experienced an increase. The Bank of Canada anticipates inflation to remain close to its 2.0% target in the near future, with Governor Tiff Macklem suggesting a potential rate hold if inflation stays within this range. However, core inflation measures, which exclude volatile sectors, have been hovering around 3.0%. Grocery prices, though slowing, remain elevated, outpacing headline inflation for nine consecutive months. Other food categories, such as processed foods and fresh vegetables, also experienced slower growth, but were partially offset by higher chicken prices. Cellphone plan price increases and rising home and auto insurance costs in Alberta further contributed to the overall inflationary pressure. The report's author, BMO chief economist Douglas Porter, suggests that the Bank of Canada's decision to maintain rates may be influenced by these persistent insurance costs and higher cell charges, indicating a potential sidelines stance in December.
